The Okhaldhunga–Kathmandu Tamang Sewa Samaj was established in response to the social and practical challenges faced by members of the Tamang community originally from Okhaldhunga District who had settled in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas.
As members of the community migrated to Kathmandu in search of employment, education, and other opportunities, they became dispersed across different parts of the city. Despite sharing a common place of origin and cultural heritage, there was no formal platform to facilitate communication, coordination, and mutual support among them.
The need for collective support became particularly apparent when community members faced serious illness, accidents, natural disasters, or the death of a family member. Families with limited financial resources sometimes struggled to meet essential needs, including the costs and arrangements associated with funeral and cremation rites. These circumstances highlighted the importance of establishing an organized community platform capable of providing support and assistance when needed.
In response to these challenges, efforts were initiated to bring members of the Okhaldhunga Tamang community together and establish a formal social organization. Mr. Dhirghaman Tamang, originally from Ragani VDC–2, Okhaldhunga District, and residing in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, played an important role in this early initiative. At the age of 34, he took the initiative to bring community members together and promote the establishment of a common organization.
These efforts culminated in the establishment of Okhaldhunga–Kathmandu Tamang Sewa Samaj in 2005 (2062 B.S.), marking an important milestone in the history of the community. The establishment of the organization provided a formal foundation for community engagement, mutual assistance, and collective action, laying the groundwork for its continued development and service to the community.
